In 1890, In 1890, The United Methodist Church, South established High Gate College in Norman Oklahoma, one year after the settlement of the town in 1889. The college for girls occupied land on the east side of Norman at the end of the town’s Main Street. With competition from the University of Oklahoma, High Gate College closed its doors in early 1895. In April of that year the Oklahoma Sanitarium Company bought High Gate College. In 1915, the state of Oklahoma bought the Oklahoma Sanitarium Company and renamed the institution Central State Hospital. In 1953, the hospital was renamed Griffin Memorial Hospital. For the first 40 years, under the supervision of Doctor David Griffin, the hospital grew to over 30 buildings and three farms.
